How to Rock a Head Scarf

Wondering how to spice up your summer wardrobe?  I have the easiest solution for you….the head scarf!  Accessories are not only an essential finishing touch, they are also the easiest way to transform any look.  Head scarves are wonderful because they can help tame any hair do while adding boldness to the ensemble.  I have very thick unruly hair so anything to help me control it in the humid summer heat is my friend.  When picking a head scarf go for bold colors and prints and allow it to be the statement piece of your outfit. Embrace, experiment and tell me how you are going to rock a head scarf this summer!

Summer Head Scarf

I am slightly obsessed with scarves!  It is actually kind of shocking that this is my first post dedicated to them.  I live in scarves in the Fall, Winter and Spring but have had a hard time incorporating them into my ensembles in the stifling summer heat until now.  The easy and perfect for summer solution: the head scarf!  Why I have not embraced the head scarf sooner I do not know.  There are so many ways to rock a head scarf allowing you to elevate your look to a whole new level.  The gorgeous scarf featured in today’s post that inspired me to experiment and ultimately embrace the head scarf was a gift from none other than Tadashi Shoji.  Not only was my interview with him life changing, this gift was as well.  The head scarf adds vibrance to any outfit making it the perfect finishing touch!  As I plan to incorporate this into as many looks as possible, I highly recommend you experiment and find the wrap that suits you best!

Menswear Spring Preview

Welcome to the second day of the menswear spring preview featuring Kirven and Antonio, two incredible dancers with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.   I have always appreciated menswear, I flip through GQ monthly, often find myself perusing their website, and hey I even have a pinterest board dedicated to menswear.  So I was obviously excited going into this photo shoot, not just because I would be working with two unbelievably talented dancers from one of my favorite dance companies, not to mention a fabulous photographer whose work I admire, but also because I love menswear.  I enjoy the subtle nuances of menswear and its simplistic nature that is accented by boldness.  Through putting this post together, I learned that the absolute most important component when it comes to menswear is fit, obviously this is important for women as well, but it is EVERYTHING in menswear.  If a jacket is too loose it automatically looks sloppy and if a pant is too tight it is just offensive.  There is however a fine line when it comes to tightness because tight is in (you have the hipster revolution to thank for this one), so it is important to stay true to yourself and your comfort levels when embracing the slim cut.  Other quick tips for spring when rocking a slim cut pant, cuff your jeans and expose your bare ankle for the world to see!  Also, try embracing an old man loafer, this is the perfect way to polish off an outfit.  I love color so I styled Kirven and Antonio in a full spectrum, when mixing and matching colors trust your gut and don’t over think it! Chalks, which are the male equivalent of pastels are also huge this spring/summer season and are generally easier to play around with.  Bottom line, have fun with your look! Embrace change and whatever you do make sure the fit is perfect!

Again, special thank you to Kirven Boyd, Antonio Douthit, Abby Jiu, Buffalo Exchange, Rise Events and Durkl!

Resort Wear (part II)

Sadly, I am no longer in Hawaii, waking up to freshly cut mango and papaya, listening to the waves gently crash into the beach.  Instead, I am in the muggy East Coast and back to the daily grind.  So in my last attempt to hold onto the islands, I’m sharing a few more pictures from my vacation.  Similar to my previous resort wear post, this post features clothes that easily translate from resort wear to ready to wear, giving the clothes more currency.

Special thank you to Marissa for modeling and for being fabulous and to Kyle for lending his incredible photography skills.  To see more of Kyle’s work go to kyleboynton.com.

This outfit is perfect for chilly Hawaii nights and also early fall evenings. I love the strong shoulders in this blouse and peek-a-boo back.  I also aggressively ignore the no white after Labor Day rule.

Blouse: Gracia (found here), Pants: Seven for all Mankind (last season), Shoes: DVF (old), Clutch: Gigee Marie (similar found here), Necklace: Eastern Market, Sunglasses: Ray Ban (found here), Bracelets: Random Assortment, Rings: Annie Cream Cheese (shop here) & Charm Georgetown (shop here)

I love love love this dress! Resort wear at it’s finest, it is also perfect for a summer wedding, and would look super cute with a cropped leather jacket.

Dress: Alice + Olivia (found here), Shoes: Christian Louboutin (last season), Earrings: Kendra Scott (found here), Bracelets: J. Crew (found here) & David Yurman (found here), Watch: Rolex, Sunglasses: Tom Ford (found here), Clutch: Nanette Lepore (last season)

Resort Wear

I hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day weekend, which normally marks the end of summer.  However, (and please forgive me)  this post is my desperate attempt to cling to summer for as long as possible.  I just got back from Hawaii and wanted to share a bit of the fashion from my trip with you.  Resort wear is tricky, because it can be so limiting, only being worn on vacation and then it ends up monopolizing valuable real estate in your closet.  So for me, the important thing when shopping for a tropical vacation, is making sure the clothes can also be worn off the island, while having enough beach flair.  This is not always an easy balance to find, but is crucial when shopping on a budget!

I love this dress because it combines pleats & ruffles, which make it wonderfully beachy. The dark green also allows the dress to be worn during transition seasons with a fab cropped jacket.

Dress: Hunter Dixon, Shoes: Nine West (last season), Sunglasses: Ray Ban, Watch: Michael Kors, Accessories: Random Assortment

I absolutely love rompers and this one is so great because it is practically a blank canvas and you can take the look in any direction.

Sunglasses are one of the most important accessories, especially when you’re in a tropical location. I love Ray Ban because they are always the original innovator of sunglasses designs. Sunglasses found here.

Romper: BCBGengeretion (found here), Shoes: DVF (last season), Purse: Gigee Marie (similar found here), Accessories: Random Assortment

The sunset is celebrated by ceremoniously lighting all the torches and blowing the conch shell. The wind was not working with us for this picture and my hair almost caught on fire!

Neon

This is majorly delayed (forgive me I was out of town) but to complete the “week” of neon this post is dedicated to accessories.  Wearing neon accessories is an easy, fabulous and (can be a) subtle way to incorporate neon into your look and wardrobe.  Scroll with caution and do not stare directly into the light.
