Wedding Guest Fashion: Formal & Cocktail

I think it is fair to say that the most common dress code for weddings is formal or cocktail attire therefore today’s Spring/Summer Wedding Guest Dress for Success Guide is dedicated to the broad spectrum that is formal wedding wear.  Formal is wonderful because you can go short or long (and you know how much I love long).  Formal is of course a step down from black tie and lends itself to many different styles, silhouettes, colors and fabrics.  And cocktail is a slight step below formal.  However, when experimenting with fabrics and volumes always be mindful of the location of the wedding and if it is indoor or outdoor.  Take it from someone who tends to overheat quickly, the last thing you want is to be stuck outside in an oppressively heavy dress.  With that said play around and find what works best for you, your body type, the venue, and make sure your shoes are comfortable enough to dance the night away in.

A very special thank you to my fabulous collaborators that made this post possible!  Thank you Carine’s Bridal Atelier for providing the gorgeous gowns, Charm & Fornash for the flawless baubles, and Drybar for the beautiful blow out!

Marchesa Garden of Glam

One of the most amazing things about spring/summer wear is that brights are always in. Make sure that one aspect of your ensemble is a true stand out.

Marchesa

Just because the dress is bold does not mean you have to shy away from accessories and bling!

The exaggerated fan sleeve is my absolute favorite! Because there are a lot of components to the dress a more conservative hemline is crucial.

Day Three of Garden of Glam’s Holiday Gift Guide: Dzifa (MrDzifs Tumblr)

Dzifa is the innovative blogger behind MrDzifs Tumblr.  Dzifa is always dressed to impress and is dashing in his preppy chic attire.  Obviously, if you haven’t already checked out Dzifa’s blog you must & dig through the archives of Garden of Glam and find his feature in the “work wear” post.

As a reminder, I have asked each contributor to share what’s on their wish list and give list this holiday season with the hope of making your holiday shopping a little easier.

Classic Ascot, Sturhling Original Men’s Watch.  The watch is very simple. I’ve bought a Sturhling watch in the past and what I love about them is they look pricey and stylish, but are still very affordable. The one I have has had no issues so far.
This watch is fantastic & the style is in its simplicity!  This would be a perfect gift for a sibling, father, uncle, boyfriend (or girlfriend….I love wearing men’s watches), in law or good friend.  You can’t go wrong with a well made stylish watch.

Anchor Leather Belt by Vineyard Vines.  This belt has been on my list for some time now.  It’s the perfect way to be preppy yet a bit edgy. Everyone has a logo on their belt buckles these days. Its either the Hermes H, LV Louis or a Ferragamo buckle. Why not switch it up w/ an anchor? Plus the cognac leather is one of my favorites.
Such a cool take on the classic brown leather belt.  It is interesting and different, yet classic enough that it could be worn with anything!  This would be a great gift for a brother, father, boyfriend, uncle, or in law.

Link Up, Bucket of Golf Ball Cufflinks.   The cufflinks are the perfect gift for you dad or uncle who’s an avid Golf player.  The perfect accessory to put on his shirt when going to work w/out being too flashy.

Cufflinks are a wonderful present for men who find themselves spending most of their time in suits or tuxedos.  Cufflinks are also great, because they allow you to add a subtle touch of personal style to your ensemble.  Not a fan of golf?  No problem, cufflinks come in many different styles acting as a true reflection of your taste.  For more cufflinks check these or these out.  As Dzifa said, these would be great for a father, uncle, in law, boyfriend or business associate.

This Sweater is perfect for the chilly weather.  The color will match pretty much anything in your closet, and its from ASOS, meaning it’s slim cut, which is perfect for me.

I am obsessed with this sweater!  I spend most of my fall and winter in search of the perfect cozy sweater and Dzifa found it!  This sweater is a great gift for anyone and everyone, father, brother, cousin, friend, uncle, boyfriend, girlfriend, sister….the list is endless.

Holiday Bling (Part II)

This Holiday Season I collaborated with Charm to showcase the hottest accessory trends.  Black and gold, while simple, complement each other perfectly and act as a stunning show stopping combination.  Charm has so many incredible pieces and I had the most wonderful time styling holiday looks with Jaclyn Mason and the Charm team.  A good rule of thumb when getting dressed for the holidays is the sparklier the better!

For more beautiful unique pieces stop by Charm in Georgetown (2910 M St.), visit their website and like them on Facebook!

Necklace: Deepa Gurnani, Bracelet: Deepa Gurnani, Rings: Melinda Maria, Earrings: Marcia Moran

I am in love with this one of a kind, show stopping cuff and am a big fan of the double cuff.

Of all the beautiful pieces I tried on, this Margaret Elizabeth ring is my absolute favorite! It is perfect for every occasion and as Jaclyn said in our interview a cocktail ring is a must have to complete an outfit.

Holiday Bling

To showcase the hottest bling for this holiday season I collaborated with Charm and Charm’s owner, Jaclyn Mason.  Charm Georgetown is an incredible local accessories boutique that features unique, show stopping, conversation starting pieces.  This season I have been very drawn to black and gold, two basics that when combined have a stunning effect.  I had such a fabulous time working with Jaclyn and her team styling four different accessory combinations to rock this season.  I am also beyond obsessed with each piece of jewelry and unique bag featured in this post.  So please scroll for some blinged out holiday inspiration (stayed tuned later this week for the other two looks) and for an interview with the fabulous Jaclyn Mason.

If you haven’t visited Charm already, you must! They are located at 2910 M St. (in Georgetown).  Also, check out their website here and of course, like them on Facebook and follow them on twitter (@CharmDC) for news on the latest trends, style tips and merchandise!

1. What tips do you have to successful accessorizing this holiday season?

Just bling it out! The holidays are a time of year that you can get away with your biggest and most sparkly accessories. Whether you’re at a family gathering or picking out your Christmas tree, a little bit of shine will make your outfit.

2. What piece of jewelry does every girl need to have in her jewelry box?

A pair of studs for everyday wear. It doesn’t matter if they’re diamonds or plain silver balls, they complete a look.

3. Who are your favorite accessory designers?

Louis Vuitton for bags and leather goods. They last forever and never go out of style. Love Quotes for scarves. We sell them in the shop, and they come in every color!

4. Who are your favorite clothing designers?

Missoni, DvF, Parker—basically, anyone that can make a great dress that you can wear for years. For winter coats, you can’t go wrong with Moncler and Burberry. If you’re going to bundle up, do it in style!

5. What inspired you to open Charm?

I grew up around some amazing jewelry collections—my mother, for example, has some heirloom pieces that are to die for. I wanted to create a store that spoke to those influences, that had jewelry and accessories that women of all styles could enjoy and wear. I was raised in DC, and I looked around Georgetown and didn’t see any shops that had this kind of jewelry that I knew there was a demand for. Charm gave me the freedom to sell amazing pieces at a great price.

6. What is your favorite part about owning your own store?

My favorite part about coming to work is definitely the interaction I get to have with our clients. Helping brides and women pick out pieces for high-end events is always fun but working with any client is so fun!

7. What is your buying process like?

We work with designers based out of Los Angeles, New York, and many other places. We have a team of three buyers that have different styles that allow us to have a variety of products that cater to different tastes. We attend all of the accessories shows in NYC annually.

8. What can you absolutely not leave your home without?

I can’t leave home without oversized sunglasses, a bag big enough to hold all of my things, and some accessory like earrings or a necklace that I adjust to whatever mood I’m in or to my outfit.

9. What is your go to piece of jewelry?

A cocktail ring. It makes a statement and is a great conversation piece at a party.

10. What was your latest purchase?

Short black Ugg boots. They may not be the cutest, but they’re a winter necessity.

**For any questions about any of the pieces featured in this post feel free to contact Charm at info@charmgeorgetown.com or at 202-298-0420.  And again, visit Charm (11am-7pm Mon.-Sat., 12pm-5pm Sun.)!**

Camo

Camo has made the most unexpected yet refreshing appearance this season.  A print normally found in the woods during hunting trips or on the battlefield has made its way onto fashionistas and red carpets.  Camo adds an air of indifference and ruggedness to each look acting as the perfect print to protect you from the chilly fall and winter winds.

Ring in the Bling

I am definitely a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl, so accessories are crucial for completing my outfits.  I find that rings can be a subtle and somewhat unexpected way to add a little polish and excitement to your look.  Enjoy the bling!
