G.L.A.M. Charity Fashion Event

I have been a horrible blogger recently, neglecting Garden of Glam, and slacking on creating new posts.  I do hope you will forgive me or at least allow me to explain.  I am the Director of Operations for G.L.A.M. (Giving Labels a Meaning).  G.L.A.M. combines a love of fashion with the desire to help children in need.  So through pop-up shops and exclusive fashion events, Meaghan (G.L.A.M.’s founder & creator of District Sparkle) and I raise money for local child advocacy groups.  And right now we are in the thick of planning the G.L.A.M. Summer Fashion Event on June 20th from 6:30-9 at 906 H St., NE that will benefit Safe Shores D.C.  Safe Shores D.C. is an incredible organization that is dedicated to protecting children that have been exposed to abuse, trauma, & violence.  And 100% of the proceeds from the event will be donated directly to Safe Shores D.C.

The G.L.A.M. Fashion Event will feature pop up shops from local boutiques and designers such as Bishop Boutique, Turquoise and Drabo Gallery an amazing raffle, open bar, and DJ MIM will be bumping beats all night while fellow bloggers Keri, Rachel, Erin, and Simone model in the fashion presentation.

So needless to say I have been a bit busier than usual and I do hope you will forgive me for (momentarily) putting Garden of Glam in the backseat.

Again, in case you missed the important details the G.L.A.M. Fashion Event is June 20th from 6:30-9:00 at 906 H St., NE.  Get your tickets HERE for the reasonable price of $10 for GA and $30 for VIP (which comes with our fabulous swag bags).  Again, get your tickets HERE!

I hope you will join me (on June 20th) in supporting local boutiques & designers in a fight against child abuse!

CFDA Fashion Awards

I know this is a little late, but I couldn’t resist putting together a best dressed list from this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards.  The Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards are the fashion equivalent to the Oscar’s, except more fabulous and adventurous.  Designers pull out all the stops and rock the red carpet with the “it” model of the moment on their arm.  Epic duos are debuted and fashion history is made.  This year the CFDA Awards were as glamorous as ever with incredible highs like Erin Wasson in Alexander Wang and Karolina Kurkova redefining the red carpet dress code in shorts designed by Michael Kors.  Sadly, there were some lows, most notably (and upsetting) Rachel Roy, who I normally love, but she just missed the mark this year in a white unflattering jumpsuit.  Between the highs and lows was glitz and glamour at its finest.  The boys of Proenza Schouler came away with the coveted womenswear designer of the year award and the always inspiring Vera Wang, who looked gorgeous, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

So what did you think of the red carpet?  Who were your favs?  Which looks have you pinned and can’t get enough of and which looks do you wish would just disappear?

Fit & Flare

Fit and flare dresses are everywhere and everything this summer.  There are many reasons that this silhouette is so popular and has made its way into everyone’s closets.  The first being that it is flattering for all body types.  The tight to exaggerated lines of the dress give the illusion of a pin up figure.  The silhouette is also fun and flirty, and because of the fullness of the skirt the hemlines tend to be longer making it appropriate for all occasions.  I wore the dress featured in this post to a bridal shower (these pics were taken after the bridal shower) and also wear it work all the time.  I hesitate to call this flattering and retro shape a trend, because in reality it is more of a wardrobe staple that should be in everyones closets.

The key to a successful fit & flare dress is in the name, fit! Make sure it is tight enough on top so the flare is more drastic.

Maxin’ Out (Part II)

Maxi dresses are my absolute favorite!  I live in them in the spring and summer and just can’t get enough.  They are so wonderful because they are easy and always look chic.  Easy and comfortable clothes are crucial to surviving the horribly humid DC summers.  On the days when I just can’t decide what to wear, because it is too hot for words I throw on a maxi and instantly feel ready to beat the heat and confront the day in style.

I am in love with one shoulders, which are more unusual in maxis making this dress extra fab.

Maxin’ Out

Maxi dresses are my absolute favorite for spring/summer, well really life.  Maxis have made a big resurgence in the past couple of years and I am so grateful!  They are the perfect seasonal transition piece and are flattering on everyone!  I have found that a surprising amount people are intimidated by maxis and question whether they will ever wear them and where they will wear a maxi to.  In reality once you discover the amazingness of a maxi you will find that it is all you want to wear.  Maxis are uber comfortable and beyond chic, perfect for casual and formal occasions!  They are the definition of a closet staple and elegance.

One of my fav things about maxi dresses is that they add about 10 inches of height.

Another amazing thing about maxis is that they can be worn with flats or heels.

The final reason I love maxis is that I can sit like this on top of a couch in a dress and not worry about having a Britney moment.

Very special thank you to my amazing photographer, Maggie!

The 90s Revisited

As I’m sure you have noticed, the 90s are back in a big way!  Fashion recycles and borrows from previous decades paying homage to the past while looking forward by changing accents, modernizing silhouettes, altering hemlines, and updating fabrics.  All of which is done in an attempt to keep things fresh and fashion moving forward, however in a bizarre way fashion is just as much about its regression as it is about progression.  Everywhere I turn now all I see is 90s!  Cropped tops, acid wash, flannel, and ripped jeans dominate street style, which are all staples of the 90s fashion.  I must admit the 90s had its fair share of fashion disasters, but I am excited for the 90s do-ver.  What about you, do you think these trends deserve revisiting?
